Cryptocurrency Advertising Ban

Google's Updated Cryptocurrency Advertising Policies

New Certification for Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Wallets

Effective September 15, 2023, Google will require advertisers offering cryptocurrency exchanges or wallets to request a new certification. This is part of Google's ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and integrity of its advertising platform.

NFT Games and Gambling-Related Content

Advertisers offering NFT games must not promote gambling-related content. Google defines gambling as games of chance, including casino-style games, sports betting, and lotteries.

General Cryptocurrency Advertising Guidelines

Advertisers planning to run ads that promote the trading of cryptocurrency or related products and services must:

  • Ensure that the products and services comply with local laws and regulations.
  • Obtain certification from Google if offering cryptocurrency exchanges or wallets.
  • Not promote gambling-related content for NFT games.

History of Google's Cryptocurrency Advertising Policies

Google first banned cryptocurrency ads in January 2018 due to concerns about fraud and market volatility. However, the company scaled back the ban in May 2018, allowing certain cryptocurrency-related ads to run. Google continues to monitor the cryptocurrency industry and update its advertising policies as needed.

Recent Cryptocurrency Ad Bans

In the United Kingdom, seven cryptocurrency adverts have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for misleading or aggressive claims. Google also banned all cryptocurrency- or ICO-related ads starting in June 2022.
